Canadians paid more than $700,000 for Mountie bodyguards to keep former prime ministers Jean Chretien and Paul Martin safe and secure over the past three years, Sun Media has learned. Documents obtained through Access to Information show RCMP VIP policing costs for Martin totalled $442,000 for the two years since he was defeated in the January 2006 election, including round-the-clock police protection when he ventures out in public. Chretien's security tab topped $260,000 between January 2005 and March 2008.
