Sex Diseases Spread to Newborns
A provincewide syphilis outbreak, which has been linked to Alberta's booming economy, has already killed one Edmonton newborn and hospitalized eight other babies in the past two years, says a local doctor. The syphilis-infected infant, which was delivered prematurely at 6 1/2 months in October 2005 in Edmonton, died shortly after birth from severe complications related to the sexually transmitted disease, said Dr. Ameeta Singh.
