CBC News Viewership 'Abysmal'

CBC president Robert Rabinovitch noted in a recent interview that viewership of the news hours is "abysmal." Most CBC newscasts' ratings have long lagged behind private competitors', but it was in 1990, when the public network shut down 10 stations to save money, that the regional operations took a serious dive. In a cost-saving move in 2000, Rabinovitch cut the remaining newscasts in half, from 60 minutes to 30, killed late night local news and announced the creation of a new suppertime national news show, Canada Now. It's been downhill ever since.
