B.C. Liberals Approve Massive Pay Increases

Victoria Gordon Campbell's B. C. Liberal government has approved massive pay raises for public service executives. As of Aug. 1, the deputy minister to the premier qualifies for a $100,000 raise, with the maximum salary in that position going to $348,600 from $243,936. Other deputy ministers qualify for close to a $77,000 raise, with the new maximum for that position rising to $299,215.

Dallaire Pleads for Action on Darfur

Retired Canadian general Romeo Dallaire blasted the U.S. and Canada on Monday for failing to rally the world and provide the political will to save people in Darfur. The reason so many people have been allowed to die in Sudan already, Dallaire told a Senate subcommittee, is simple. "There's no self-interest. Who cares about Darfurians? They're sub-Saharan Africans. They're like Rwandans."
